Term 2

Welcome to Week 10

Week 10

Welcome to the final week of another very exciting and fulfilling term at the College. In reflecting back over the semester, we celebrate the way that our students have stepped into their learning and involved themselves in the myriad of curricular and co-curricular opportunities at the school.

Ready to Learn – Semester Reports

In being ‘Ready to Learn’, students see and seek out available growth opportunities. They remain at the ready to commit with confidence and enthusiasm to their own learning. They courageously step outside of their comfort zone to make new discoveries. They remain compassionately available to others to support them along their journey. Students are then agents of their own learning which is such a critical skill in today’s modern world. The content and questions might change, but the ability to shape one’s own path and to think critically, to work collaboratively and to act to solve problems are essential future skills and attributes.

As a school we encourage the development of these traits through the establishment of a warm and caring culture, underpinned by core values, complemented by a plethora of learning pathways. We celebrate the important partnership that connects school to home and the positive relationship we have with students that allows them to shine.

The end of a semester provides students with the excellent opportunity to pause and reflect on their Readiness to Learn. The semester reports allow students to celebrate their achievement and also to reflect on their potential areas of growth. Students, in partnership with parents and staff, can review goals, analyse successes and explore future actions that will support their ongoing growth. They can look to strategies they have implement that have worked in certain subjects with a view of replicating them elsewhere. Students can consider the time and effort they have committed to their studies to consider whether an adjustment may be necessary moving forward. There are no shortcuts to success – the key elements of effort, application and attitude are common ingredients of achieving well.

In being agents of their own learning, we want our students to seek out assistance from our teachers. We encourage them to ask questions, to be curious and to act on feedback received. In being open to opportunities and challenges our students grow. In approaching semester results with a growth mindset students plot clear pathways forward to set themselves up for future success.

Learning Anywhere Anytime

Students are to be commended for the positive and industrious way that they have committed to the College’s extensive co-curricular program over the course of Semester 1. We are passionate about providing holistic learning opportunities for students and have been thrilled with their energetic involvement in the activities and events on offer. The skills that they learn from being involved in our clubs, sports and arts programs, our faith and service opportunities, not to mention the leadership initiatives are life long and transferable.

Committing to these types of programs allows our students to connect with like-minded people, developing important social connections. It gives them a genuine voice in co-shaping initiatives. It allows our students to shine and to share their prodigious gifts and talents with others. These programs and initiatives allow our students to proudly promote our 40-year legacy and publicly and proudly represent our College in the boarder community. Importantly, our students’ rich engagement in the life of the school builds our positive culture of inclusivity and acceptance; of compassion and support; of belonging and connection and allows them to grow holistically.

Own Your Path

Over the past few weeks, our current Year 10 students have been actively engaging in course counselling sessions in preparation for Year 11 in 2026. These meetings with staff have provided a valuable opportunity for students to explore their individual learning pathways and make informed decisions about their subject choices for next year.

Through thoughtful discussions and guidance, students are gaining a clearer understanding of the options available to them and how these align with their interests, strengths, and future aspirations. We commend our Year 10s for their enthusiasm and maturity throughout this process and look forward to supporting them as they take the next exciting step in their educational journey.

Corpus Christi Feast Day

An outstanding example of our community gathering together in spirit and solidarity, celebrating out unique culture was Corpus Christ Feast Day. In recognising this special day, we gathered in the morning for our whole school Mass celebrated by Fr Phong. This beautiful Mass set the scene for the rest of the day, highlighting what it means to be the real presence of Jesus for others. We concluded the day with the annual talent show where students from across the College had the opportunity to showcase their impressive talents in front of a very positive, warm and receptive audience.

Despite the rain, students participated fully in the events and activities across the day. The leadership of our Year 12 students was exceptional. They modelled what it meant to be the Corpus Christi and contributed in such a positive way, bringing joy to those around them.

First Holy Communion

We congratulate our Year 4 students who recently completed their First Holy Communion at the St Thomas Parish Church. This very special time in their faith journey was the culmination of many weeks of preparation. We thank the Parish community and College staff for their support and guidance of our students during this significant time in their lives.

World’s Greatest Shave

Last Friday, a number of Year 12 students and staff participated in the World’s Greatest Shave to support the Leukaemia Foundation. This initiative, which raises funds for individuals and families affected by blood cancer, was embraced with enthusiasm and a strong sense of purpose by our school community.  Through their collective efforts and the generous support of donors, the team successfully raised over $12,000. Congratulations to all who participated, contributed, and supported this meaningful cause.

NAIDOC Week Assembly

Yesterday, our whole school came together for our NAIDOC Week assembly, celebrating this year’s theme: “The Next Generation: Strength, Vision and Legacy.” The assembly was a meaningful opportunity to reflect on the importance of First Nations culture, history, and contributions - especially as we look to the future and the role young people play in shaping a more inclusive and respectful Australia.

We were honoured to welcome the Wadumbah Aboriginal Dance Group, who shared the rich Noongar story through vibrant performance, music, and storytelling. Their presence brought deep cultural insight and connection to our community, reminding us of the strength and resilience of First Nations peoples. As a school, we continue to walk together in reconciliation and acknowledgement, committed to learning, understanding, and moving forward with respect and unity.

Year 12 Retreat

We wish all of our Year 12 students well as they venture out on their Retreat experience on Wednesday this week. Students will be attending four different sites, pausing their busy schedules to explore their own spiritual journey and their special connection with family and friends. We thank staff for their excellent support of our students on this very important occasion.

Holidays

As always at the end of the term, I would like to wish all students, families and staff well for the upcoming holiday break. We look forward to students returning to the College safe, well and energised to commence Term 3.

Best wishes and every blessing

̨UU Week 10

Dear Parents and Guardians,

"You are never alone on this Earth. You are always part of a bigger story.” – Oliver Jeffers, “The Heart and the Bottle”

As we close out Term 2 in this Jubilee Year of Hope, this quote from Oliver Jeffers reminds us that even in the smallest moments of growth, kindness and courage, we are all contributing to something much greater — a shared story of community, faith, and purpose.

Throughout the term, our students have continued to flourish — embracing challenges, showing compassion, and living out our College values with spirit and strength. Whether in classrooms, on the stage, at sporting events, or through acts of quiet leadership and care, they have made us all proud.

I also want to acknowledge the unwavering dedication of our staff. Their passion for teaching and genuine care for every student create the environment in which so many moments of success and discovery take place each day. I am deeply grateful for the energy and professionalism they bring to our learning community.

These past two weeks alone have reflected the vibrancy and spirit of our College:

  • Corpus Christi Day brought our K–12 community together in a joyful celebration of faith and belonging.

  • Many of our Year 4 students received the Sacrament of First Holy Communion, marking a significant and sacred milestone in their faith journey.

  • Our Sporting Carnivals showcased teamwork, resilience and House spirit, with students cheering each other on and striving for their personal best.

  • Our Junior Assemblies have highlighted learning achievements and the confident voices of our students.

  • The energy at the Junior Disco was contagious, with dancing, laughter and community fun filling the evening.

  • And our Kindy Mud Day reminded us all of the joy that comes from curiosity, nature, and hands-on exploration.

I am proud of the way our students have approached this term. With courage in their learning, compassion for one another, and commitment to their growth. I also thank our dedicated staff for their ongoing care, creativity, and tireless work in nurturing every child.

As we head into the holiday break, may this be a time of renewal, connection and rest for all families. Thank you for your ongoing support and trust. I look forward to all that awaits in Term 3.

"Let us be infected by the love of God infect us. Let us allow it to guide our life and offer it to others." – Pope Francis

Term 2

Welcome to Week 8

The Feast of the Corpus Christi

The Feast of the Corpus Christi is a very special event in the life of our school. It is a time when we stop to celebrate our unique community and reflect on the true meaning of the name of our College.

The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ is also known as the Solemnity of Corpus Christi, which translates from Latin to "Body of Christ." It is a time, according to Pope Francis, for us to remember that “God will meet their basic needs to eat and to be filled with the joy and amazement of receiving loving nourishment from Jesus Christ”.

During last year’s Solemnity of Corpus Christi Mass, Pope Francis spoke of Jesus giving us His Body and Blood, teaching us to give of ourselves to those around us who are in need: “There are some who say that true freedom means thinking only about ourselves, enjoying life, doing whatever we want without regard for others. This is not freedom but a hidden slavery.” True freedom, the Pope said, is when we serve others, “motivated solely by love.”

During this homily, Pope Francis said that the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist “invites us to be close to our brothers and sisters wherever love calls us.” He said that “we urgently need to bring back to our world the good, fresh aroma of the bread of love, to continue tirelessly to hope and rebuild what hatred destroys”.

We are excited at gathering together as a whole K-12 school community this Friday to celebrate our ̨UU Feast Day and reflect on how we can model Jesus by being truly present for others. The day provides us with the opportunity to consider how we can model Jesus and fulfil our College Vison of being Outstanding for Others. It allows us to celebrate the fact that, again as Pope Francis said, “Christ himself is truly in our midst to nourish us, console us, and sustain us along the way”.

In looking to Jesus as our role model, we seek to ‘love one another’ just as he loved us, to bring peace to our world and to be of service to others.

Our Feast Day also allows us to celebrate our very special and unique history built across two schools over the past four decades. The wonderful legacy created by so many past families, students, staff and friends is one we never take for granted but revere as we continue to grow our story through the continued contribution of many. As the Corpus Christi, the Body of Christ, we celebrate each person in our community and recognise the important role that they have in positively shaping our wonderful culture.

Pope Francis of course also spoke of joy being a “gift from God”, so we are looking forward to a fun-filled day on Friday where we pause our busy routines to take time out to be with one another and enjoy participating in a wide variety of exciting planned activities and events. We thank Fr Phong in advance for celebrating our whole school Mass on this very special occasion.

St Thomas More Parish – Sunday 22 June 2025

This year, the St Thomas More Feast Day will be celebrated on the same day as the Solemnity of Corpus Christi at the Parish Church. This is a very special day for the St Thomas More Parish as they will also be celebrating the Jubilee of Government, the Jubilee of Seminarians, the Jubilee of Priests and the Jubilee of Bishops.

As Fr Phong says, “there is much to be thankful for and much to pray for”. The Parish will mark this very special occasion by having Mass, followed by a Eucharistic Procession, which will include parts of the College, and a shared meal. Fr Phong has extended an invitation to College staff, students and families to attend any or all of these events. Details are as follows:

Date: Sunday 22 June 2025

  • 10.00 am - Holy Mass

  • 11.00 am - Eucharistic Procession with recitation of the Rosary.

  • 12.00 pm - Return to the church and Benediction

  • 12.05 pm - Shared Meal

First Holy Communion

We look forward to our Year 4 students celebrating their First Holy Communion this weekend at the St Thomas More Parish.

We thank the St Thomas More Parish and our Year 4 teachers for their generous support in preparing the students for this very special occasion. We wish all students well for this special day in the life of their faith journey.

Best wishes and every blessing

̨UU Week 8

Dear Parents and Carers

As we move into the final weeks of Term 2, the energy and pace across the Junior School continue to build. This is a particularly busy time for staff and students as Semester One reports are being finalised. These reports are an important opportunity to reflect on the growth, progress, and achievements of each individual student over the first half of the year. It is a privilege to witness the many ways our students continue to flourish both academically and personally.

Over the past fortnight, we’ve enjoyed several significant events that highlight the spirit and learning taking place across our community.

6 Blue Assembly

Our 6 Blue students entertained and informed us with their fun and engaging class assembly, presented in a creative "newsroom" style. It was a student-led showcase of learning, humour, and teamwork, and a wonderful reflection of their confidence and collaboration.

Primary LifeLink Launch

Earlier this term, two of our Catholic Mission and Identity student leaders proudly represented our school at the Primary LifeLink Launch. They joined students from across the Archdiocese for a morning of learning, reflection, and inspiration. A special highlight was the opportunity to ask questions directly to Archbishop Timothy Costelloe and Bishop Don Sproxton, who generously shared their wisdom and insights. It was a meaningful experience that deepened our students’ understanding of the role they play in supporting those in need.

Grit, Goals and Gales – CCC Storms the CAPSS VANS!

On Tuesday 10 June, our Junior School students braved wild weather at the CAPSS VANS carnival, showing incredible perseverance, teamwork and school spirit.

  • AFL – 2nd place: Resilient and united in tough conditions.

  • Netball – 3rd place: Strong teamwork and determination.

  • Soccer – 5th place: Great sportsmanship and focus.

  • Volleyball – 7th place: Positive, spirited and growing each game.

Despite the rain and wind, our students represented ̨UU with Courage, Commitment and Compassion. Well done to all involved!

First Holy Communion Preparation

Our Year 4 students recently participated in a reverent and joyful retreat in preparation for receiving the Sacrament of First Holy Communion this coming weekend. The retreat was a beautiful time of prayer, reflection, and connection, helping the students prepare their hearts to receive Jesus in a special and sacred way. We encourage families to take time this week to talk with their child about the importance of this sacrament and celebrate this milestone in their faith journey.

Healthy Eating Habits

A nutritious lunchbox fuels growing bodies and active minds! Healthy lunchbox items help our students stay focused, engaged, and ready to learn throughout their school day. Please include a balance of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and dairy to ensure their physical health and lifelong habits for wellbeing begin as early as possible.

Items for consumption at ‘Crunch and Sip’ time are asked to be whole fruits such as apples or pre-cut fruit and vegetables. Yoghurt and cereal-based snacks are best left for recess. Thank you for your support.

For ideas on healthy lunch box inclusions, please access the following link:

Child Safeguarding

Please be aware that the atrium toilet cubicles are reserved for student use only. Accessible toilets for adults and younger siblings are in the Junior Administration block and are available for use upon request.

Junior School Disco

Our Junior School disco is fast approaching, so please indicate your child’s attendance by submitting your permission via Consent2Go. The disco is reserved for enrolled students at the school from Kindergarten to Year 6; therefore, younger siblings cannot attend.

Upcoming events:

  • Wednesday 18 June - Junior Ethics Olympiad

  • Friday 20 June – Corpus Christi Day

  • Saturday 21 June – First Holy Communion

  • Tuesday 24 June – 2 Blue Assembly

  • Wednesday 25 June – Salvado and Chisholm Patron Day

  • Monday 30 June - NAIDOC Assembly

  • Tuesday 1 July – CAPSS Interschool Cross Country and Pre-Primary Blue Assembly

As we near the end of the week, we look forward to celebrating Corpus Christi Day—the Feast Day of our College. This special occasion brings together students from Pre-Primary to Year 12 in a joyful expression of community, faith, and belonging. It is a time for us to reflect on what it means to be Outstanding for Others through the Spirit of Hope. As Pope Francis reminds us, “In the heart of each person, hope dwells as the desire and expectation of good things to come.” We are proud to stand together as a K–12 community, united in purpose and inspired by the message of hope.

Warm regards,

Katya Anderson

Silent Auction - Handcrafted Glass Platter: Shifting Perspectives

Meet Gaby Fabris, a passionate and dedicated Visual Arts educator whose journey at ̨UU began in 1990.

When she joined the College under the leadership of Tony Curtis, there were just 600 students and a single Visual Arts teacher - her!

Over the years, Gaby has nurtured young artists, developed a thriving Arts department, and shared her deep-rooted passion for sculpture, ceramics, and in recent years glasswork, with students and colleagues alike. With a background in Art Education and Fine Art from WAIT (now Curtin University), Gaby has spent her career mentoring aspiring creatives and encouraging artistic exploration. Her journey into glass artistry is particularly special, her Murano, Venice heritage traces back to a lineage of master glassmakers, making this medium both deeply personal and historically significant. Now, she shares this incredible craft with students, fostering a culture of artistic exploration and creative discovery.

In celebration of Corpus Christi Day, we are delighted to present a unique opportunity to bid on a stunning, handcrafted glass platter by Gaby Fabris, a striking piece titled Shifting Perspectives. Measuring approximately 29cm square, this one-of-a-kind artwork shimmers with iridescent flecks, symbolising hope, transformation, and the beauty of change. The gentle pink hues evoke love, nurture, and compassion, while the contrasting black signifies the mystery and richness of viewing the world through unfamiliar lenses.

Don’t miss the chance to own this breathtaking masterpiece while supporting Project Compassion, a cause close to the heart of our College.

Place your silent auction bid and celebrate the legacy of an extraordinary educator & artist. The highest silent auction bid will win and announced on Corpus Christi Day!

Feast of Corpus Christi

A Eucharistic Community

Each year, the Catholic Church celebrates the Feast of Corpus Christi: the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. This celebration draws our focus to the central mystery of our faith: that Jesus is truly present in the Eucharist. This year, the Church marks the feast on Sunday 22 June, while our College will gather as a whole-school community to celebrate it earlier on Friday 20 June.

As a school named Corpus Christi, the feast is especially meaningful. It reminds us that we are a Eucharistic people, called to make Christ’s presence in the Eucharist known through our actions, our relationships, and our service to others.

A Special Moment for Our Year 4 Students

This year’s celebration holds particular significance as our Year 4 students will receive their First Holy Communion between our College Feast Day and the official Church celebration of Corpus Christi. As these students prepare to receive the Body of Christ for the first time, they lead all of us in renewing our own understanding and love of the Eucharist.

Their journey is a reminder that every reception of the Eucharist is an invitation to be transformed – to become what we receive and to carry Christ with us in the world. As a College, it’s a joy to walk alongside them during this special time.

The Spirit of Hope in a Jubilee Year

The Church around the world is also celebrating the Jubilee Year of 2025, a time of renewal and grace under the theme "Pilgrims of Hope." The lead-up is focused on building a Spirit of Hope among Catholics: hope in God’s promises, hope in the Church, and hope in the future.

Our celebration of Corpus Christi is deeply connected to this theme. The Eucharist is a sacrament of hope: a sign that Christ is with us, that God’s love is never far away, and that we are never alone on the journey. As we move through this Jubilee Year, our College community is invited to walk as pilgrims of hope – grounded in the Eucharist, and committed to living with courage, commitment and compassion.

Pilgrimage to Orvieto: A Sacred Connection

Next year, students and staff taking part in our College Pilgrimage to Italy will have the chance to visit the historic town of Orvieto. This town holds a special place in the story of Corpus Christi. In the year 1263, a German priest who struggled with belief in the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist experienced a miracle while celebrating Mass nearby, the host began to bleed during the consecration. The blood-stained cloth was brought to the Pope in Orvieto, who declared it a sign of God’s truth and love. He soon established the Feast of Corpus Christi for the entire Church.

The beautiful Orvieto Cathedral was built to house the relic, and it remains a sacred site to this day. For our pilgrims, visiting Orvieto will be a powerful moment, not just of witnessing Church history, but of standing in the place where faith and doubt met, and hope triumphed.

Living as the Body of Christ

As we prepare for our College Mass and the wider feast of Corpus Christi, we are reminded of who we are: a community formed by Christ’s Body and called to be His Body in the world.

Let us pray for our Year 4s as they take this sacred step, for our pilgrims preparing to walk in the footsteps of saints, and for all in our College community, that we may live with a spirit of hope, trusting that Christ is with us, always.

Lord Jesus and His Church, the Body of Christ: Pray for us.

Walking Together: Our Commitment to Reconciliation

At ̨UU, our Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) Committee has been working with purpose and care to guide our community in deepening our understanding of and commitment to reconciliation with First Nations Australians. This work is grounded in our Catholic identity, our College values, and our belief in the dignity of every person.

As part of this journey, we marked National Reconciliation Week with a moving Sorry Day Assembly on 26 May. Across both the Junior and Senior Schools, students engaged in learning about the Stolen Generations and the ongoing impact of these policies on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families. In our Senior School, we were privileged to hear a powerful testimony from Lee, a member of our staff, whose mother and brother were members of the Stolen Generation. Lee was joined by her Aunty Jacqueline, an Elder who spoke with courage about her own experience of being removed, and how her faith gave her strength and hope.

Looking ahead, we are preparing for a NAIDOC Week Assembly in Week 10, which will bring together our whole College in a shared celebration of First Nations culture. Junior School students will contribute through song, and we will welcome Noongar performers to lead us in story, music, and reflection in a rich K–12 experience.

These moments are not standalone events, they are part of a larger commitment to truth-telling, listening, and walking together. Our RAP Committee continues to lead initiatives and conversations that help shape a more just and compassionate future for our community. We are working toward finalising our first Reconciliation Action Plan by the end of 2025, as we hope to continue walking this path with purpose and hope into 2026 and beyond.

Vive le Tour! – Celebrating French Culture through the Tour de France Alexandra CarcioneWed, 11 Jun 2025 02:31:09 +0000/news-blog/2025/vive-le-tour57f874e8440243944ef66aa7:57f8a565d482e9a19e4c2458:6848e73c7ea4281f451423d6As part of our ongoing celebration of French language and culture at ̨UU, we are excited to introduce our students and school community to France's most iconic sporting event: Le Tour de France.

Known as La Grande Boucle (the Great Loop), the Tour de France is the world's most prestigious cycling race and one of the most watched sporting events globally. This year's 112th edition will commence on Saturday, 5 July 2025, in Lille, northern France, and will conclude on Sunday, 27 July 2025 with the traditional finish on the Champs-Élysées in Paris. For the first time in five years, the Tour will take place exclusively within France, allowing riders and spectators to experience the full diversity of l'Hexagone.

A Rich History of Competition

The Tour de France began in 1903 and has grown to become cycling's greatest challenge. Over three weeks, the world's best cyclists will navigate 3,320 kilometres of France's most beautiful and challenging terrain, from the cobblestones of the north to the soaring peaks of the Alps and Pyrénées.

Australia has a proud Tour de France history since 1914. Phil Anderson blazed the trail as the first Australian to wear yellow (1981) and first non-European to lead the race, holding it for nine days in 1982. Cadel Evans made history as Australia's only Tour winner in 2011 at age 34. Notable stars include Robbie McEwen (Green Jersey winner), Richie Porte (top-10 finisher), and Caleb Ewan (stage winner). Australia's 2025 representatives include Ben O'Connor, Jai Hindley, and Luke Plapp, continuing our strong Tour de France legacy.

Did You Know? Les Maillots – The Sacred Jerseys

The Tour de France is famous for its coloured jerseys, each telling a fascinating story of excellence and achievement:

  • Le Maillot Jaune (The Yellow Jersey) – Yellow was chosen in 1919 to match the colour of the pages of L'Auto, the newspaper that created the Tour! This jersey is worn by the overall race leader and is the most coveted prize in professional cycling.

  • Le Maillot Vert (The Green Jersey) – This jersey rewards the most consistent sprinter and versatile rider. It's awarded to the points classification winner who demonstrates speed and reliability across all types of stages.

  • Le Maillot à Pois Rouges (The Polka Dot Jersey) – The distinctive red polka dots on white background honour the "King of the Mountains"! This jersey celebrates those brave enough to conquer France's most challenging peaks.

  • Le Maillot Blanc (The White Jersey) – This jersey is reserved exclusively for the best young rider under 26 years old. It represents the future stars of cycling and symbolizes emerging talent and unlimited potential!

The 2025 Route – Un Parcours Magnifique

This year's route promises spectacular scenery and fierce competition as the peloton travels through historic French regions, medieval villages, and iconic landscapes that have shaped French culture for centuries. From the industrial heritage of the north to the vineyard-covered hills of Burgundy and the dramatic mountain stages that will determine the final champion.

Dans la classe -  In the classroom

As we follow the race in class this year, we will explore vocabulary related to cycling, geography, and Francophone culture — helping students engage with authentic, real-world language experiences.

Welcome to Week 6

Capital Development Plan Stage 22: Junior School Refurbishment

We are delighted to share with our community the exciting news that the long-awaited refurbishment of the two Junior School Atriums and adjoining classrooms will commence towards the end of this year. The design and development of this stage of the College’s ongoing Capital Development Plan has been years in the making so we are very pleased that it is coming to fruition.

I would like to acknowledge the input of parents, students and staff into the design of the spaces which will fully modernise classrooms and promote the delivery of contemporary and innovative holistic learning opportunities for students. The plan extends to the outside of the buildings with the integration of learning spaces into the landscape to support the notion that ‘learning happens anywhere, anytime’. Students will have the opportunity to therefore experience a continuity of learning wherever they are on the campus.

I would also like to acknowledge College Architects, Munns Sly Moore, for their considerable time and effort in developing Stage 22, along with Catholic Education Western Australia (CEWA) for their assistance.

The Junior School refurbishment is a considerable undertaking with an envisaged completion date scheduled towards the end of 2027. The build will necessitate certain adjustments to the regular school routines, however, please rest assured that the plans we have in place will support the welfare and ongoing learning of students. Further details of this exciting phase in the College’s history are as follows:

Refurbishment Works to Begin – James Nestor Auditorium

Refurbishment works will commence this week on the James Nestor Auditorium, with an expected completion date in November 2025. This space is being transformed to serve as a temporary learning area for our Year 5 and 6 students while the College undertakes major capital development works at the Junior School. To view a map of where the James Nestor Auditorium is located, please visit the map here.

Stage 22 Capital Development Program – A Two-Year Transformation

This refurbishment is a key early step in our broader Stage 22 Capital Development Program, a two-year initiative that will deliver significant improvements to our Junior School facilities, including:

  • Senior Atrium refurbishment and enclosure – Commencing December 2025, to be completed by end of 2026

  • Junior Atrium refurbishment and enclosure – Commencing end of 2026, to be completed in 2027

During this time, the James Nestor Auditorium will remain the designated learning space for Year 5 and 6 students, ensuring a high-quality, consistent learning environment is maintained.

Acknowledging our Arts and Music Staff and Students

We extend our sincere thanks to the Performing Arts, Visual Arts, and Music departments (staff and students) for their support and flexibility in accommodating this refurbishment project. Their cooperation has been instrumental in allowing this important work to proceed smoothly.

The College has successfully planned to relocate the activities of our Music students to alternative facilities within the Performing Arts precinct at the College to ensure the continuation of their experience.

Parent Information Session and Community Feedback

To ensure families are fully informed, the College will host a Parent Information Session for Junior School families in the coming weeks. This session will provide further detail about the refurbishment and the Stage 22 building program, along with an opportunity for parents and caregivers to ask questions and share feedback.

We thank our staff, students, families, and wider community for their ongoing support as we undertake this exciting phase of capital development at ̨UU. This refurbishment is an important milestone for us as a K-12 community. It supports our continued growth and development as an aligned College that strives to create the best possible learning environment for students.

To provide you with an exciting glimpse of what the future holds for the Junior School space, we invite you to access the Architect’s design impressions by clicking the button below.

̨UU Week 4

Dear Parents and Caregivers

As we near the halfway point of Term 2, our Junior School continues to be filled with moments that reflect the heart of our College—community, compassion and pride in learning. In this Jubilee Year of HOPE, we are especially reminded of the importance of coming together to celebrate progress, foster understanding and uplift one another. Over the past fortnight, students have participated in a number of meaningful experiences that highlight not only their academic growth, but also their commitment to living out our College values in action. From reflective assemblies to outstanding sporting achievements, there is much to be proud of across our community.

National Sorry Day – Honouring the Past, Committing to the Future

Our Years 1 to 6 students gathered last week for a reflective and meaningful National Sorry Day Assembly, led with dignity and compassion by our student leaders Jasmine Wassell and Joanne Noel. Together, we paused to acknowledge the historical injustices faced by the Stolen Generations and to consider our role in walking the path of ongoing reconciliation. At ̨UU, we remain committed to fostering empathy, truth-telling and a deepening understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives across our school community. Reconciliation is not a one-day event—it’s a journey we walk together, each and every day.

Crossing the Finish Line in Corpus Style!

Our Junior School team showed true determination and sportsmanship at last week’s SSWA Junior Cross Country Carnival. Competing against over 50 schools, our runners gave it their all—earning top 10 finishes, personal bests, and a wave of school spirit. Special congratulations to Solomon Martin (Year 6 Runner-Up), Harvey Clarke (5th), and Hayden Willey and Hendrix Olislaegers (both 9th place).

As always, we thank our families for their ongoing support. The wonderful efforts of our students at the Cross Country Carnival were a shining example of what it means to be a proud member of ̨UU—demonstrating determination, respect, and team spirit. We kindly remind all parents attending external events to familiarise themselves with our Parent Code of Conduct, ensuring we continue to uphold a positive and respectful presence in the wider community.

3 Green Assembly – Literacy and a Star Among Us

3 Green delighted the Junior School with an engaging assembly, showcasing the incredible progress they’ve made through the Initial Lit program. The students confidently demonstrated their growing literacy skills through vibrant performances and clever storytelling. The assembly also included a special tribute to Gisella, a talented student from our College who recently appeared on Australian Idol. Her journey has inspired many of our students, and it was heartwarming to see 3 Green celebrate both learning and local talent in such a meaningful way.

Strengthening Literacy in Years 3–6

This year, alongside InitialLit in Pre-Primary to Year 2, we’ve introduced two evidence-based programs to further strengthen literacy in Years 3–6—SpellEx in Years 3 and 4, and Word Origins in Years 5 and 6.

SpellEx focuses on spelling through patterns, structure, and meaning rather than memorisation, helping students build deeper connections between words, pronunciation, and comprehension. Word Origins explores the history and structure of English, equipping students with tools to decode complex vocabulary and develop confidence in reading and writing.

These engaging programs are already making a positive impact in classrooms, supporting our students to become more capable, curious, and confident learners.

Upcoming events:

  • Thursday 5 June – Year 5 Parish Mass

  • Tuesday 10 June – 2G Prayer Assembly and CAPSS VANS Carnival

  • Thursday 12 June – First Holy Communion Retreat and Year 4 Parish Mass

As we look ahead to the remainder of Term 2, we are excited for the many learning opportunities, celebrations, and community moments still to come. Thank you for your continued support and partnership in your child’s learning journey. We encourage all families to stay connected by checking the College calendar regularly and keeping an eye out for updates via SEQTA. Together, we continue to nurture a vibrant and hopeful learning community at ̨UU.

Warm regards,

Katya Anderson

Head of Junior School

Term 2

Welcome to Week 4

Being Outstanding for Others

Dear Parents, Caregivers and Community,

As families and students are aware, we have a very clear Vision at the College of being Outstanding for Others. We encourage all within our community to use their God-given talents to the full in service of others.

We want all of our students to be agents of their own learning and engage fully in the life of the school in striving toward this Vision. That is to:

  • Live out our College Values of Courage, Commitment and Compassion

  • Model Jesus through kindness and respect in all interactions

  • Setting ambitious personal goals and rising to challenges

  • Encouraging peers by sharing knowledge and lending a helping hand

  • Being open to all experiences and challenges

  • Involving oneself positively in the community

  • Seeking out and acting on feedback

Radium Girls

Given the above, it has been wonderful to see so many of our students step into their learning and grasp hold of the holistic growth opportunities readily available at the College. An excellent example of this was our recent outstanding drama production of Radium Girls. Students rose to the challenge, stepping outside of their comfort zone to deliver what was an outstanding performance. Their professionalism and dedication in bringing to life this very poignant and significant true story is to be applauded.

Directors Ms Ciara Taylor and Mrs Melissa Kelly in their synopsis of Radium Girls wrote that “theatre is more than just storytelling. It is a mirror to history, a conversation with the present, and a challenge to the future. Radium Girls is a compelling reminder of resilience, justice, and the strength of those who refuse to be silenced”. Congratulations to our students for delivering this message so powerfully and with genuine compassion and commitment – they should be very proud of their significant achievement.

Radium Girls involved a cast and crew of over 50 students – for some of these students this was their first time being involved in a school production. It was very much a student led production with their strong contribution to stage management, set design, photography, costumes, makeup, hair, and props. With auditions commencing August last year, we acknowledge the tremendous commitment of our students across many months to bring this show to life in such an impactful way.

In addition to their three formal performances, students joined College staff to provide an impressive and very educative workshop for close to three hundred students from across eight different schools on the workings of a production of this size and quality. The feedback from attending schools was excellent. The Radium Girls cast and crew epitomise what it means to be Outstanding for Others and are therefore wonderful role models for other students.

Of course, we also need to acknowledge our very dedicated Performing Arts Team and associated College staff for their considerable efforts in providing such a positive, caring and supportive environment that allows our students to flourish and grow.

Inter-House Dance

We congratulate all of the students involved in our inaugural Inter-House Dance evening held at the College on Tuesday last week. The evening was designed to build connection amongst students across the College and to grow House spirit, both of which were very much in evidence in the lead up to and during the event.

The evening was a terrific success with a theatre full of supportive families and friends cheering on the students with great encouragement. In being Outstanding for Others, our senior students choreographed the dances and worked with other students in the House to prepare for the show. The performances were excellent, showcasing the rich dance culture present at the College and also the excellent leadership skills from the senior students.

We acknowledge all of the students involved for providing such an entertaining evening and for celebrating their special talents together in promoting their House. Students are to be commended for stepping forward to be involved in this exciting new growth opportunity at the College.

Again, we recognise our terrific staff for creating such a formative growth opportunity for our students, particularly Mr David Mueller, the Performing Arts Team and the House Community Coordinators.

I have outlined but two of the many and varied opportunities available at the College that supports the development of our students both in and out of the classroom. In a busy but very rewarding start to Term 2, we have seen students step forward with confidence and positivity to represent themselves, their families and the College, in a broad range of offerings and we commend them for their efforts.

In creating a culture at the College which promotes a readiness to learn underpinned by a richness of care and support, we celebrate our students who involve themselves fully in all aspects of College life. In being Outstanding for Others these students use their talents to the full to grow holistically, to build the Corpus legacy and to be compassionately present to those around them. They importantly also develop the skills to face future challenges with confidence, work collaboratively with others and make quality decisions in shaping their journey ahead and positively impacting the world around them.

Best wishes and every blessing,

Jeff Allen

Principal

̨UU Week 4

Dear Parents and Caregivers

Year 6 Camp Reflection – A Journey of Growth and Courage

Our Year 6 students have returned from an unforgettable camp experience — one filled with challenge, discovery, and personal growth. Over the course of the camp, students immersed themselves in activities that developed their growth and embraced the key values we strive to nurture at ̨UU: encouragement, teamwork, direction, courage, determination, adventure, growth, communication, and resilience.

It was heartening to witness each student step out of their comfort zone. Whether it was taking on a physical challenge, supporting a peer through a group task, or navigating moments of uncertainty, every child demonstrated the capacity to grow when given the right encouragement and space to flourish. We were particularly proud of how they worked with new peers, learning to listen, collaborate, and lead in equal measure.

As I reflect on this experience, I’m reminded of a powerful message in A Good Life by the late Pope Francis:

“A good life is built day by day, through small steps, shared journeys, and courageous choices made not just for ourselves, but for others.”

This week, our Year 6 students lived out this message — embracing challenge, uplifting one another, and returning home with a deeper understanding of what it means to live with purpose and integrity. Their journey is a reminder to us all that growth often begins when we choose to take that first brave step into the unknown — together.

We look forward to seeing how these camp experiences continue to shape their leadership, empathy, and confidence throughout the rest of the year.

Mr Simon Overton Shares: A Eucharistic Journey Begins for Year 4

Our Year 4 students have started their journey of preparation to receive the Sacrament of Eucharist (First Holy Communion). Following a successful Parent/Child Workshop the students and their Parents have made their commitment to prepare to receive Jesus more fully through the Sacrament of Eucharist. The students, guided by their parents and instructed by their class teachers will continue to prepare to receive the Sacrament at a special Mass to be held in the St Thomas More Parish on Saturday, 21 June.  May the Holy Spirit guide the students, their families and teachers as they prepare for this momentous occasion in their lives.

Literacy in Action: Insights from Mrs Carma de Groot on InitialLit and Morning Book Buddies

At the beginning of the school year, we proudly introduced InitialLit across our Pre-Primary to Year 2 classrooms as part of our commitment to building strong foundational literacy skills. InitialLit is a comprehensive, evidence-based literacy program. It provides a structured, sequenced, and systematic approach to the teaching of phonics, phonemic awareness, reading fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. The program ensures that every child receives explicit instruction and ample practice in the essential components of word study, reading and writing, setting them up for long-term success.

The implementation of InitialLit has been progressing well, with students enjoying the clear structure and engaging daily lessons. Teachers have observed increased student confidence, participation, and steady development in their reading and writing skills. The consistent approach across year levels ensures that all students are supported at their point of need.

To further enhance our focus on reading, we are excited to introduce a new ̨UU initiative – the Morning Book Buddies program. This initiative invites parents of Pre-Primary to Year 2 students to volunteer on Wednesday and Thursday mornings from 8:35am to 8:55am to listen to students read. A roster will be created with one parent per class per day, with plans to expand the program over time.

To prepare volunteers, we held a short parent workshop on Monday, 19 May to explain how to best support students during reading sessions in a consistent and encouraging way. This initiative complements our existing parent rosters and strengthens the vital partnership between home and school.

Together, through InitialLit and Morning Book Buddies, we aim to foster confident, fluent readers and instil a lifelong love of reading in every child.

Partnering Together: ̨UUs on Uniform, Attendance, and Care – from Mrs Danielle Damjanovic

Uniform

It is wonderful to see our Years 3-6 students wear their winter uniforms with pride to promote their connectedness to our College. We kindly remind parents to inform their child’s class teacher where items of footwear or apparel are temporarily being worn. Please note, the wearing of sneakers is reserved for physical education days and Fridays.

Medical Certificates for Absences

Please notify Absentee@corpus.wa.edu.au or advise absentee details via the Parent App on days your child/ren are absent. A medical certificate is required for any student absence of three or more consecutive days, even if you have already notified the school of the absence.

Before and After School Care:

There are an increasing number of students arriving early to our Junior School each morning. Our supervision of students commences at 8:15am in the undercover area so please access the before school care provider, Camp Australia located on our school grounds as needed. A gentle reminder that students and parents are asked not to enter the atriums prior to 8:30am also. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Upcoming events:

  • Tuesday 20 May – 2B Prayer Assembly and Play in the Past Incursion for Year 1’s

  • Wednesday 21 May – National Simultaneous Story Time

  • Monday 26 May – Sorry Day Assembly

  • Tuesday 27 May – 3G Assembly

  • Monday 2 June – Public Holiday

  • Tuesday 3 June – 6B Assembly

As we move through the Term, it’s been inspiring to witness the many ways our students are embracing learning, faith, and community with open hearts and minds. Whether through the physical and emotional growth seen at camp, the spiritual preparation for First Holy Communion, or the joy of learning to read and share stories, our students continue to remind us of the wonder found in everyday moments. A beautiful book that captures this spirit is What Do You Do With a Chance? by Kobi Yamada—a gentle reminder that courage often begins with simply saying yes to opportunity. May we all continue to encourage our children to take chances, support one another, and grow with purpose.

Warm regards,

Katya Anderson

Head of Junior School

Term 2 Uniform

Term 2 is Winter Uniform. For all uniform information, please visit the Uniform Shop page.

Preloved Uniforms

As the College transitions fully to the new uniforms in 2026, the opportunity to donate your old uniforms becomes a possibility across the College.

Last year the College, along with the Friends of Corpus and the Stewardship Student Leaders, investigated how we could recycle/repurpose old uniforms and commenced a pilot program in the Junior School. The response was wonderful and a large number of preloved uniforms were donated to who send uniforms to Nigeria and West Africa.

There are collection points at Student Services, the College Uniform shop and in the James Nestor foyer close to the back entrance of the Uniform shop. We ask that the donations are clean and placed in a bag labelled as a donation. As there are lots of items of uniform coming in and out of the College each day, it is important to clearly distinguish what is a ‘donation’ versus ‘lost property’.

Thank you for your support of this initiative.

Supporting Calm Classrooms: How We Help Students Stay “Ready to Learn”

At our College, we understand that learning doesn’t happen easily when students are feeling overwhelmed or stressed. That’s why a big part of our approach is focused on de-escalation – helping students (and staff!) recognise rising stress levels and gently guiding them back to a calmer, more focused state.

As defined by the Berry Street Education Model, “De-escalation is about recognising stress levels in yourself and your students, then using techniques to bring the class into an optimal state to facilitate learning” (BSEM, 2021, p.7).

In simple terms, de-escalation means using strategies to reduce the stress response and help students feel safe, calm, and ready to learn again.

What Does De-escalation Look Like in Practice?

We use a 3-step process to support students when they are feeling dysregulated or overwhelmed:

  1. Proactively Create a Calm and Predictable Environment
Students thrive when they know what to expect. Our classrooms are structured with consistent routines and calm transitions, which help reduce anxiety and increase students’ sense of safety.

  2. Monitor and Recognise Early Signs of Stress
Our staff are trained to identify early signs that a student may be becoming stressed or unsettled. Recognising this early allows us to act before stress escalates into bigger behavioural challenges.

  3. Use Strategies to Return to an Optimal Learning State
Once we notice signs of stress, we use personalised tools and calming strategies to support students back into a “just right” state – one where they can engage, participate and learn effectively.

What Does De-escalation Look Like in Practice?

To help students become more aware of their own emotional responses, we use something called a Ready to Learn Plan. These plans help students:

  • Understand what situations may cause them to feel stressed or upset

  • Recognise early warning signs in themselves

  • Choose strategies that help them calm down and feel in control again

Each student’s plan is individual, empowering them with skills for self-regulation and emotional awareness. You’ll find these Ready to Learn Plans in your child’s College Diary – and we encourage you to take a look, discuss them with your child, and even consider how similar strategies might be used at home.

Term 2

Welcome to Week 2

Journeying Together

Dear Parents, Caregivers and Community,

Each day in schools, we are reminded that the formation of character is not found in grand moments alone, but in the small, consistent choices our young people make. At our recent Anzac Day assembly, I had the opportunity to share a message with our students, encouraging them to consider what it truly means to live out our vision to be outstanding for others

This isn’t about waiting for recognition or applause. Being outstanding for others is not reserved for moments of grandeur or being acknowledged on a stage. It is in the moments when no one is watching, when backs are turned, that we reveal what it truly means to be outstanding for others.

It is in the small, daily decisions and actions; those that show kindness, compassion, and care for others, that true character is formed. When we consistently choose to act with the good of others in mind, these choices begin to shape who we are: individuals of deep integrity and humility. Being outstanding for others is not a single act, but a way of life built gradually, layer by layer, step by step, moment by moment. These quiet, often unnoticed actions form the foundation of the young people our Corpus students are becoming.

Mother Teresa said, “Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.” In a world that often celebrates the spectacular, we reminded our students that it is the seemingly simple acts: helping a classmate, noticing and then reaching out when someone on their own, saying thank you, or picking up rubbish unprompted. By living out the values of Courage, Commitment, and Compassion each day we are being outstanding for others. This slowly but surely builds who we become and together a school culture, that is a Courageous, Committed and Compassionate community.

We encourage our students to be inspired daily by the many stories and experiences surrounding us at Corpus that provide excellent examples of what being outstanding for others looks like. Recently, we’ve had three meaningful opportunities to reflect on the lives and actions of remarkable individuals. By taking the time to acknowledge their stories and sacrifices, we help our students connect with these powerful examples and draw valuable lessons from their experiences.

As Catholics, we are an Easter people, a community defined by hope, joy, and the life-giving promise of the Resurrection. But the story of Easter is not just about the empty tomb. It is also about the life that led to it, the small, faithful acts of service and love that Jesus lived each day. Before Jesus made the ultimate sacrifice of His death on the cross, He showed the world who He was through the way He lived. He washed the feet of His disciples, healed those on the margins, fed the hungry, and spoke to the forgotten. These everyday moments of compassion and humility revealed His heart and gave meaning to His sacrifice. It is through this lens that Easter makes sense: not as a standalone event, but as the culmination of a life lived in total service to others.

This Easter season, we also joined the world in mourning the passing of Pope Francis, a modern example of this same Gospel witness. His papacy was not marked by grandeur or power, but by quiet strength, humility, and profound simplicity. He lived in modest accommodation, carried his own bags, personally served the poor, and never ceased to ask others to pray for him. Through these simple acts, he reminded us all that leadership begins with service, that what matters most is how we treat one another. He inspired a generation to look outward, to live lives of purpose, and to be people who make a difference, one small act of kindness at a time. As Jacinta Collins, Executive Director of the National Catholic Education Commission, reflected:

“Pope Francis was a global voice for the poor, the young, and the marginalised. His belief in education as a tool for transformation resonates deeply with the mission of Catholic schools. Pope Francis inspired a generation of young people to live with courage and compassion. His legacy will continue to guide our work in Catholic schools and shape the hearts and minds of students for generations to come.” (21 April 2025)

As we continue to live the joy of Easter, may we remember both Jesus’ small acts of love and Pope Francis’ example of servant leadership. May we, too, be people of hope, grounded in faith, generous in service, and committed to building a better world, one encounter at a time.

On Anzac Day, and again at our recent assembly, we took time to reflect and honour those who gave their lives in service of others. The soldiers we remember demonstrated extraordinary courage and a profound willingness to sacrifice everything for the greater good. Their legacy extends beyond the battlefield; they embodied the values of true friendship, unwavering loyalty, and servant leadership. The Anzac spirit of mateship, sacrifice, and resilience continues to inspire us today. In addressing our students, I challenged them to see that the Anzacs are remembered not only for their readiness to go to war, but also for the smaller, less heroic things; their mateship and spirit, the way they supported one another through unimaginable hardship, day by day, moment by moment, truly being outstanding for others.

So, what does this mean for us, at ̨UU?

It means everyday living our College Vision, being outstanding for others, not as something out of reach, dramatic, or reserved for rare occasions, but as something personal, practical, and woven into daily life. At the assembly, I encouraged every student to begin making small positive changes today, not waiting for a grand moment of recognition, but instead embracing the power of small, consistent acts of kindness. By approaching each day with Courage, Commitment and Compassion, our students contribute to building a culture where being outstanding for others becomes a way of life at ̨UU.

As adults, whether we are parents, caregivers, teachers or mentors, we hold a vital responsibility. We are the models our young people observe and learn from. It is essential that we quietly recognise and affirm the small moments when our children demonstrate these core values. Positive reinforcement not only acknowledges these acts but increases the likelihood that they will be repeated. Our words matter, but our actions matter more. When we all chose to be part of the Corpus Christi community, we all made a shared commitment to live with the values of Courage, Commitment and Compassion, so that our young people can consistently see what it means to be outstanding for others

Let us continue to be a community where these values are not only spoken but lived, through the small, daily acts that together create a place where every individual is seen, supported, and inspired to be outstanding for others.

Best wishes and every blessing,

Tim Shanassy

Acting Principal

Honouring the ANZAC Legacy

We were deeply grateful for the reverence and participation shown in last Thursday’s ANZAC Commemoration assembly. The story of the ANZACs holds profound significance for us as Australians, reminding us of the courage, sacrifice, and mateship that have shaped our national identity. We honour and remember all those Australians and New Zealanders who gave their lives so that we may live in peace and freedom.

Charles Bean, a World War I correspondent and official war historian, once wrote: “It was not so much what they did but the way they did it.” This quote reminds us that the ANZACs were not only brave but honourable. They carried themselves with integrity and pride. It is a legacy that challenges us to reflect on how we live our lives today - to approach everything we do, no matter how big or small, with purpose, integrity, and compassion.

At Corpus, we talk often about our core Values: Courage, Commitment, and Compassion. These are more than just words - they are the foundation of the respectful, supportive environment we all want to be a part of. We understand that living by these Values every day isn’t always easy. But we must try.

Show compassion by being kind and understanding of one another’s differences. Be committed to your learning and to creating a positive space for others. And above all, have the courage to speak up when something isn’t right - to stand up for each other, and for what is fair and just.

We wish our community a meaningful, productive, and enjoyable Term 2!

̨UU Week 2

Dear Parents and Caregivers

Welcome back to Term 2 at ̨UU. We hope you and your family had a restful break and are ready for another vibrant term of learning, growth, and community.

Over the holidays, the world mourned the loss of Pope Francis, a global spiritual leader whose legacy of compassion, humility, and care for others has deeply inspired people of all ages. While this news may be difficult to comprehend for our younger students, we can honour his memory in ways that are meaningful and age-appropriate. At Corpus Christi, we continue to embody the values Pope Francis championed—especially kindness, service, and respect for all people and our planet. In our everyday actions, through simple gestures of generosity and care, we teach our students to be outstanding for others, just as he encouraged us all to be.

Anzac Assembly

In this spirit of remembrance and service, our students joined together in Week 1 for our whole College ANZAC Assembly. Our Year 4 to 6 students attended the service alongside our senior students, paying their respects and reflecting on the courage and sacrifice of those who have served. A special highlight of the assembly was our Year 4 to 6 choir, led by our talented Music Teacher, Mr Honey. The students performed two moving songs, one of which was an original composition by Mr Honey himself—a beautiful tribute that truly captured the solemnity and significance of the occasion. We also acknowledge our Year 6 readers, who led us through a thoughtful and reverent prayer reflection, helping to set a meaningful tone for the assembly.

Entry and Exit Points

Over the break, several maintenance works were carried out across the Junior School, including updated line marking around the drop-off and pick-up zones to support a safer and more efficient flow of traffic. We kindly remind all families that the Marsengo Road exit near the Kindy and Pre-Primary car park is not to be used for entry at any time. Using this exit to enter the school grounds poses a significant safety risk to our youngest students and their families during busy drop-off and pick-up periods. We appreciate your cooperation in helping us maintain a safe environment for everyone.

Term 2 Events

Term 2 is shaping up to be another exciting chapter in our school year, filled with rich learning experiences and community celebrations. One of the major highlights is the upcoming Year 6 Camp, a significant milestone that fosters independence, teamwork, and resilience. We also look forward to author visits, Mother’s Day celebrations, Cross Country events, and more opportunities for our students to shine and connect.

Please refer to the College calendar for a full list of events and key dates and continue to check SEQTA and class communications for updates throughout the term.

  • Wednesday 14 May - Da Vinci Decathlon

  • Wednesday 14 May to Friday 16 May - Year 6 Leadership Camp

  • Saturday 17 May - First Holy Communion Commitment Mass and CCC Family Mass

As we begin this new Term together, let us continue to guide our children in living with Courage, Compassion, and Commitment—values that reflect both our College mission and the legacy of leaders like Pope Francis. In the words of children’s author E.B. White, “Hang on to your hat. Hang on to your hope. And wind the clock, for tomorrow is another day.” May Term 2 be a season of growth, gratitude, and joyful learning for all.

Warm regards,

Katya Anderson

Term 2 Uniform

Term 2 is Winter Uniform. For all uniform information, please visit the Uniform Shop page.

To allow time for Winter Uniform adjustments, students will have a two-week grace period before the full winter uniform is required from Term 2, Week 3.

As parents, we often juggle countless responsibilities while striving to raise resilient, kind, and emotionally healthy children. In the whirlwind of daily life, it’s easy to focus on correcting behaviour or setting expectations. But one of the most powerful gifts we can offer our children—especially when things are tough—is unconditional positive regard.

What Is Unconditional Positive Regard?

Unconditional positive regard, a term coined by psychologist Carl Rogers, means accepting and valuing a person without judgment or conditions. When applied to parenting, it’s about consistently showing our children that we love and value them for who they are—not just for what they do.

This doesn't mean ignoring poor behaviour or avoiding boundaries. Instead, it means holding space for our child's inherent worth, even when they make mistakes. It’s the quiet, consistent message of: “You are loved. You are important. No matter what.”

Why It Matters

Children are constantly learning about who they are and how they fit in the world. When they feel accepted and supported, even when they mess up, they develop:

  • Self-worth that isn’t based on achievements or behaviour

  • Emotional safety that fosters openness and connection

  • Resilience, because they know mistakes don’t make them unlovable

Unconditional positive regard is especially crucial for children who experience trauma, adversity, or struggle with emotional regulation. It offers them a safe base from which to grow, learn, and heal.

The Berry Street Education Model

Our school is currently implementing the Berry Street Education Model (BSEM) to strengthen the wellbeing and learning outcomes of all students. One of the key principles of BSEM is relationship-based practice—which closely aligns with the idea of unconditional positive regard.

In our classrooms, this might look like:

  • Welcoming students warmly each day, regardless of what happened yesterday

  • Holding high expectations while also offering emotional support and predictability

  • Separating the child from their behaviour: “That choice wasn’t okay, but you are still important and valued.”

As parents and carers, you can mirror this approach at home to reinforce the messages your child receives at school.

How to Practice Unconditional Positive Regard at Home

  1. Use Supportive, Non-Judgmental Language
Instead of labelling a child as “naughty” or “difficult,” focus on the behaviour and maintain belief in the child’s ability to do better:
“That was a tough moment. Let’s figure out how we can approach it differently next time.”

  2. Reaffirm Love, Even During Conflict
Simple affirmations like: “I didn’t like what you did, but I always love you” can help repair connection and reduce shame.

  3. Connect Before You Correct
When your child is dysregulated, they need connection more than correction. A calm, supportive presence can de-escalate the situation and build trust.

  4. Stay Regulated Yourself
Children learn regulation through co-regulation. When we stay calm, even when they are not, we teach them what emotional safety looks and feels like.

  5. Model Forgiveness and Repair
When you have a tough parenting moment, own it. Apologising and reconnecting shows your child that relationships can withstand mistakes.

When It’s Challenging

There will be moments—especially during meltdowns, misbehaviour, or emotional overwhelm—when unconditional positive regard feels hard to access. That’s normal. This is not about being a perfect parent; it’s about being a present one. When we repair and reconnect after ruptures, we teach children that love is not conditional on their behaviour.

Final Thoughts

The implementation of the Berry Street Education Model at Corpus Christi is strengthening our commitment to building safe, supportive, and emotionally rich learning environments. By extending these principles into the home, we can work together—parents and educators alike—to help every child feel seen, heard, and unconditionally valued.

Viva il Giro! Celebrating Italian Culture through the Giro d’Italia Alexandra CarcioneMon, 05 May 2025 03:16:00 +0000/news-blog/cycling57f874e8440243944ef66aa7:57f8a565d482e9a19e4c2458:68182bf6f3355f5f36ca68fdAs part of our ongoing celebration of Italian language and culture at ̨UU, we are excited to introduce our students and school community to one of Italy’s most iconic events: Il Giro d’Italia.

Often called La Corsa Rosa (the pink race) for the colour of the leader’s jersey, the Giro is one of cycling’s most prestigious races — alongside the Tour de France and the Vuelta a España.
This year’s edition will commence on Friday, 9 May 2025, in Durrës, Albania, marking the first time the race starts outside Italy in Albania. Over three weeks, cyclists from around the world will traverse the diverse landscapes of Italy, from the snow-capped Alpi to the sun-drenched coastlines of the Mezzogiorno (southern Italy).

The final stage, scheduled for Sunday, 1 June 2025, will take place in Rome, and in a profoundly symbolic gesture, it will be dedicated to Pope Francis. The stage will include a neutralised ceremonial start within Vatican City, where riders will pass through the Vatican Gardens and exit via Porta del Perugino, before the competitive racing begins.

“The start from Vatican City, strongly desired by Pope Francis during the Jubilee Year, adds a special emotional value to this stage, merging sport with spirituality.”
— Mauro Vegni, Director of the Giro d’Italia

Una tappa speciale per un uomo speciale&Բ;—&Բ;A special stage for a special man.

The 2025 Giro promises breathtaking routes, dramatic climbs, and passionate fans lining the streets shouting “Forza!” (Come on!/Let’s go!). But il Giro is more than a race — it’s a moving celebration of Italian resilience, beauty, and community spirit. It passes through ancient towns, vibrant cities, and cultural landmarks, each stage revealing a new side of la bella Italia.

A Humble Shepherd, A Global Legacy: Pope Francis and the Future of the ChurchAlexandra CarcioneMon, 05 May 2025 01:52:32 +0000/news-blog/2025/humble-shepherd57f874e8440243944ef66aa7:57f8a565d482e9a19e4c2458:681818b16fdefa0faa9cd7d4A Humble Shepherd, A Global Legacy: Pope Francis and the Future of the Church

As the world paused to mourn the passing of Pope Francis during the school holidays, we at ̨UU give thanks for a life defined by Courage, Commitment, and Compassion. His papacy has been one of powerful witness, not through dramatic declarations, but through steady, faithful leadership grounded in service and simplicity.

Pope Francis became a symbol of what it means to lead with integrity in the modern world. From choosing to live in modest accommodation rather than the Apostolic Palace, to speaking plainly and directly to the world’s most pressing issues, he embodied the message that the Church must not be distant from people’s lives but walk alongside them with compassion and truth.

There is a story circulating about Pope Francis leaving only $100 in his will, and while this not yet been verified, it is widely shared and has a powerful symbol of his simplicity and detachment from material wealth. Whether strictly factual or symbolic, the message behind it aligns with how he lived: humbly, without attachment to possessions or privilege. Pope Francis lived and died as he always encouraged others to live: with radical humility, a deep trust in God, and a clear focus on the things that truly matter,  love, service, justice, and faith.

In a world often obsessed with status, wealth, and accumulation, this final gesture (or at least the story of it) speaks volumes. It reminds Catholics and others that leadership is not about power or comfort, but about living for others and staying true to the Gospel.

Agility and Authenticity

Throughout his pontificate, Francis upheld the Church’s deep commitment to Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition, while also urging the Church to remain attentive to the real human experiences of today. He didn’t change the core teachings of the Church, rather, he deepened its ability to listen, accompany, and respond pastorally to the joys and struggles of ordinary people.

He invited the Church to be agile, not reactive, but discerning; not rigid, but responsive to where the Holy Spirit is calling us in this time of history.

The Conclave: A Moment of Global Discernment

This Tuesday, the College of Cardinals will enter a sacred process known as the Conclave, the centuries-old tradition by which a new pope is elected. The word conclave comes from Latin meaning “with a key,” because the cardinals are locked in seclusion, dedicating themselves wholly to prayer, dialogue, and decision-making.

Here’s how it works:

  • Cardinals under the age of 80 are eligible to vote.

  • They meet in the Sistine Chapel, casting secret ballots until one individual receives a two-thirds majority.

  • Once elected, the new pope is asked if he accepts. Upon acceptance, he chooses a papal name and is introduced to the world from the balcony of St Peter’s Basilica.

The Conclave is not simply a vote,  it is a profound moment of listening to God, for the sake of the Church and the world. Over the next few days, we will see scenes on TV and social media of crowds gathering in Saint Peter’s Square, watching for the smoke from the chimney atop the Sistine Chapel. After each vote the ballots are burnt: if the smoke is black then no decision has been made, but when the smoke is white, we know the Cardinals have made their choice!

Francis’ Long View: A Reformed and Global Church

One of Pope Francis’ most enduring contributions has been the reshaping of the College of Cardinals itself. During his papacy, he appointed cardinals from a wide variety of nations, many from parts of the world historically underrepresented in Church leadership.

In doing so, he has ensured that the next pope,  and the direction of the Church, will reflect a more global and missionary identity, one that speaks to the realities of life in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and beyond.

His choices have strengthened the Church’s ability to engage with a rapidly changing world while remaining anchored in timeless truths.

Why This Moment Matters to Young People

For the students of ̨UU, this moment is not only historic, it is personal. Pope Francis consistently challenged young people to be courageous, to think deeply, to act justly, and to live your faith with joy and authenticity.

He reminded young people that your voice matters, and that the Church needs your energy, your questions, and your hope. He called you not just the future of the Church, but its now.

As we await the election of a new pope, we invite our young people to:

  • Pray for the Conclave, that the cardinals may be guided by the Holy Spirit.

  • Stay curious and engaged, learning about how the Church works and how it grows through time.

  • Reflect on your own leadership, and how you too are called to influence your community with courage, commitment and compassion.

A Legacy of Hope

Pope Francis leaves behind a Church more open to encounter, more globally aware, and more confident in its mission. He taught us that strength is found in simplicity, and that fidelity to Christ requires both heart and mind.

As the Church prepares to elect a new pope, we trust that the seeds Francis has planted of reform, of dialogue, and of global solidarity will continue to bear fruit.

Pope Francis once said, “The future does have a name… and its name is hope.”

May his legacy inspire all of us, staff, students, families, to be people of hope, humility, and healing in our world.

Let us watch and pray, as the Church prepares to choose a new shepherd. May the next pope continue to walk the path Francis paved: one of love, mercy, and faithful courage.

A fantastic demonstration of Courage, Commitment, and Compassion from all runners, the event saw participation from students spanning Years 3 to 12.

As has been tradition, results were calculated based on the finishing position of students within their year and gender groups. Much like the ACC Cross Country scoring system, the Carnival rewards the lowest number of points, with first place earning 1 point, second place 2 points, and so forth for students completing the course within 30 minutes.

To ensure fairness, an even number of competitors from each house were included in the calculations, regardless of total finishers.

Term 1

Welcome to Week 10

Journeying Together

As Term 1 draws to a close we look with anticipation to the celebration of Easter and reflect on Pope Francis’ Lenten message when he speaks about “journeying together in hope.”

Pope Francis says we are “called to walk at the side of others, and never as lone travellers. The Holy Spirit impels us not to remain self-absorbed but to leave ourselves behind and keep walking towards God and our brothers and sisters. Journeying together means consolidating the unity grounded in our common dignity as children of God. It means walking side-by-side, without shoving or stepping on others, without envy or hypocrisy, without letting anyone be left behind or excluded. Let us all walk in the same direction, tending towards the same goal, attentive to one another in love and patience.”

In picking up on this theme of ‘journeying together in hope’, we reflect on a busy, yet very rewarding Term 1 filled with opportunities for student learning and growth, both in and outside of the classroom. As a connected community, we journey together with the aim of providing an environment where students flourish and experience hope and joy in confidently exploring the multitude of pathways present at the College.

Pope Francis in his Lenten message also says that we “are pilgrims in this life; each of us is invited to stop and ask how our lives reflect this fact.” He says we should ask ourselves “am I really on a journey, or am I standing still, not moving, either immobilised by fear and hopelessness or reluctant to move out of my comfort zone?”

I would like to acknowledge the Courage, Commitment and Compassion of our students who have positively stepped forward into their learning this term, becoming agents of their own development whilst being attentive to the needs of those around them. In journeying together, our College community has raised significant funds and awareness for those in need, most recently through our Caritas Project Compassion drive, celebrated in each other’s successes and provided a gentle, caring presence for each other. Our students have proudly represented themselves, their families and the College on the local, state and national stages, willingly sharing their gifts and talents with others. Our College community flourishes and its legacy continues to build because of our collective intent to live out our Values every day in all aspects of life across the school.

This special community is built around authentic connections to nurture a sense of belonging and engagement. We promote wellbeing and human flourishing by “nurturing spiritual, religious, cognitive, physical, emotional, and social development” (CEWA). In living, teaching, and embedding the core tenants of positive education, we want to promote a flourishing educational environment where students ‘feel good and do good’. According to Keyes and Annas (2009) “feeling good represents the value of a life high on positive emotions and engaging experiences whereas doing good represents functioning effectively, being connected, overcoming challenges, and contribute meaningfully to others.”

In helping to create this type of environment, we prioritise the critical connections between home and school, encouraging rich engagement from parents and caregivers in the life of the school. In striving to develop a common language across our community around wellbeing, learning and spiritual formation, we provide a sense of certainty and familiarity for students. This supports our philosophy of consistent and regular routines which forms part of our Berry Street Education Model integrated across the College.

With this in mind, we were delighted to see so many parents and students attend the Year 11 and 12 Parent Teacher Student Interview evening last week. The shared conversations had around areas of celebration and growth will support the continued learning journey of our students. We are pleased to remind families that the next round of interviews for the remainder of the year levels across the College is scheduled for Tuesday 29 April with booking details being sent to families soon. Whilst these opportunities provide an important connection point between parents and teachers, we always encourage families to regularly monitor their child’s academic and pastoral progress via SEQTA and to reach out to teachers at point of need.

The conclusion of the term provides an opportune time for students to continue to reflect on their journey and to explore new ways they can grow and learn with the strong support of their College community. From a growth mindset perspective, it allows students to consider key elements and circumstances underpinning their successes and then look to replicate these into the future to promote ongoing growth.

Holidays

I would like to wish families all of the very best for an enjoyable holiday break, with the hope that you take the opportunity to spend quality time with friends and family.

As always at the end of the term, I would like to again acknowledge our excellent and generous staff who consistently go above and beyond to provide the best possible learning environment for our students.

As we prepare for Easter and the Resurrection of Christ, we again turn to Pope Francis:

“Let us be renewed by God's mercy, let us be loved by Jesus, let us enable the power of His love to transform our lives too; and let us become agents of this mercy, channels through which God can water the earth, protect all creation and make justice and peace flourish.”

We look forward to our continued journey together next term.

̨UU Week 10

Dear Parents and Carers

As we approach the end of Term 1 and prepare for a well-earned break, we take this opportunity to celebrate the many achievements and moments of joy that have filled the last ten weeks.

At the heart of this season is Easter, a time of renewal, hope, and profound joy. As Pope Francis reminds us, “Christ’s resurrection is not an event of the past; it contains a vital power which has permeated this world.” This message calls us to reflect on the transformative power of love and compassion—not just during Easter, but in our daily lives. It’s in this spirit of renewal and gratitude that we reflect on the vibrant learning, connection, and community spirit that have defined Term 1.

Spark Program

This term, we were thrilled to launch our new Spark Program for literacy and numeracy. With the support and expertise of our dedicated senior teachers—Mr Joshua Pauley, Ms Natalia Ciavarra, and Ms Cheree Dobra—this program provides an exciting extension opportunity for students. Working in small, dynamic groups of approximately 15 peers, students have engaged in deep, purposeful learning activities that stretch their thinking and strengthen their skills. It has been wonderful to witness the energy, curiosity, and confidence growing in each session as students explore new ideas and challenge themselves in meaningful ways.

Year 6 Green Assembly

Our Year 6 Green class delivered a truly engaging and interactive assembly with their creative version of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” The audience was treated to a fun and educational quiz show that tested everyone’s knowledge of global facts—and some quirky trivia about our staff! The students hosted the show with enthusiasm, humour, and confidence, making it a memorable morning for all who attended. Assemblies like this remind us of the joy and learning that comes from student-led creativity and performance.

House Patron Day

We celebrated a deeply meaningful House Patron Day for Merici and Pallotti Houses, centred around the theme of connection. From our youngest Pre-Primary students to our Year 12 leaders, the day was filled with activities that brought students together, built friendships, and strengthened their sense of belonging within their House and the broader College community. The joy, unity, and school spirit that filled the campus were truly inspiring—what a beautiful way to honour the values of our House Patrons.

Better Beginnings Workshop

Looking ahead to early Term 2, we are excited to be hosting the Better Beginnings parent workshop and story time on Monday, 6 May. This special initiative is part of the Western Australian family literacy program, and we’re delighted to offer families a hands-on session in the library. Parents will be introduced to the Kindergarten resource pack and learn simple, effective ways to build early literacy skills at home. This is a fantastic opportunity for parents—especially those with younger children—to learn, connect, and share the joy of reading with their children. We hope to see many of you there!

CAPSS Cricket Carnival

What an outstanding achievement! On April 1st, our students competed in the CAPSS Cricket Carnival and displayed extraordinary skill, sportsmanship, and team spirit. We are incredibly proud to share that ̨UU was the overall winner of the event.

  • The boys’ team successfully defended their title, winning the championship for the second consecutive year through impressive determination and teamwork.

  • The girls’ team continued their incredible streak, claiming victory for the fourth year in a row, showcasing their dedication, grit, and cohesion.

What stood out most, however, was the way our students embodied our core values of courage, compassion, and commitment—playing with integrity, lifting one another up, and supporting their peers. A huge congratulations to all players and a heartfelt thank you to Mr Trickett and all staff who made this day possible.

Caritas – Project Compassion

Throughout Lent, our Junior School has been actively involved in fundraising for Caritas Australia’s Project Compassion. Through class initiatives, prayer, and generous giving, we have raised $1,362.30—a testament to the compassion and generosity of our school community. Thank you to every family who contributed and helped make a difference to those most in need.

As we head into the Easter break, we give thanks for a term filled with learning, laughter, growth, and connection. We are incredibly proud of all our students and grateful for the unwavering support of our families and staff.

We wish you a joyful and restful holiday. May this Easter be a time of peace and renewal for your family, filled with love, gratitude, and the hope of new beginnings.

Warm regards,

Katya Anderson

Head of Junior School

Term 1

Welcome to Week 8

Season of Lent

This coming Sunday will see us at the halfway mark in the Season of Lent.  As we look with hope to Easter Sunday, and the school holidays, we remember the importance of being present in each moment.  The Lenten Season is a time for our spiritual spring clean, where we are encouraged to find new ways to be Outstanding for Others.

As the Corpus Christi, the Body of Christ, we are constantly called to be more for our community.  Where we have failed to do this in the past, we know we can seek reparation in order to get back on track.  Last Sunday’s Gospel spoke of a fig tree that hadn’t produced fruit in many years.  The owner of the field wanted to cut it down as he considered it was simply taking up space.  The Gardener, whom we know to be Jesus, however sought more time to nurture the tree demonstrating to us that even in our darkest times, God provides opportunities for growth and renewal.

On this day in March 2022, Pope Francis reminded us, “if we want the world to change, then first our hearts must change”.

Ignite the Spirit Retreat

We were thrilled to hold our Ignite the Spirit Retreat for the Year 7 students on Friday last week. Ably supported by our superb Year 12 students, the Year 7s enjoyed an array of different activities designed to build their connection as a cohort and to allow them to experience the myriad of growth opportunities at our school.

In ‘retreating away’ from the regular daily routines, students were given the opportunity to reflect on future goals and aspirations and connect to their faith and spirituality through a Liturgy of the Word. They were introduced to the College’s Act of Service program, taking time to consider how they might be of service to others.

The day was a terrific success thanks to the dedicated efforts of College staff. We applaud our Year 7 students for their infectious enthusiasm in investing heavily in the day to learn more about themselves and others. Of course, we also commend our Year 12 students who were truly Outstanding for Others in the way that they selflessly and joyfully gave of their time and talents, modelling what it means to be a Corpus Christ student.

House System

In the lead up to our Patron Days for Merici and Pallotti Houses scheduled for this Friday, it is timely to reflect on the importance and impact of our K-12 House structure.

In our second year as an amalgamated College, we decided to create our K-12 House system to support connectedness and belonging across the College. Formally launched at the beginning of last year, the Houses build vertical connection across our school, develop spirit and camaraderie and deepens understanding of our Patron Saints.

Our House system:

  • Provides pastoral care, guidance and support

  • Builds community and identity

  • Encourages unity, teamwork and communication

  • Enriches student life through a range of faith-based, cultural and sporting activities

  • Allows students to interact within and across year levels

  • Raises funds for Catholic charities through the celebration of House Patron Days

  • Promotes leadership opportunities

We celebrate the genuine involvement that students and staff have in their Houses and the positive culture that they create. Led by our incredible House Community Coordinators, House spirit is alive and well at the College, as evidenced recently at the very successful Inter-House Swimming Carnival.

Our House system has grown across the years, but the core elements of belonging, care and support remain firmly woven into the fabric of the structure.

ACC Swimming

We wish our ACC Swimming team all the very best as they compete in the Associated and Catholic Colleges A Division Swimming Carnival this Wednesday at the Perth High Performance Centre (formerly HBF Stadium).

Our dedicated swimmers have been tirelessly training for the upcoming carnival, pushing their limits, honing their techniques, and building their endurance to ensure peak performance.  We acknowledge the excellent work of coaches and staff in preparing the students for this event and wish all those representing the College the best of luck.

The College continues to offer many and varied activities and opportunities integrated into the life of the school. In ensuring this type of culture at Corpus Christi, we strive to provide a flourishing environment that allows our students to confidently step outside of their comfort zone to learn and grow.

Best wishes and every blessing,

Jeff Allen

Principal

̨UU Week 8

Dear Parents and Carers

The past two weeks have been filled with remarkable achievements, celebrations, and moments that truly highlight the incredible spirit of our students and school community. As Roald Dahl once said, “Somewhere inside all of us is the power to change the world.” The events of this fortnight have shown how our students continue to grow, support one another, and strive for excellence.

 CAPSS Interschool Carnival – Champions!

Our students displayed outstanding teamwork, determination, and sportsmanship at the CAPSS Interschool Carnival, securing first place overall! Every participant gave their best effort, representing our college with pride. A huge congratulations to all students, staff, and supporters who contributed to this fantastic achievement.

NAPLAN Success – A Job Well Done!

Our Year 3 and 5 students took on the challenge of NAPLAN with great focus and determination. Their efforts and perseverance were truly commendable, and we are incredibly proud of their hard work. Thank you to our teachers and families for the support and encouragement that helped our students perform at their best.

Harmony Week – A Celebration of Diversity

Tuesday’s Harmony Week dress-up was a wonderful display of cultural pride and inclusivity. It was heartwarming to see students embracing and celebrating their heritage, reinforcing the message that ‘everyone belongs.’ The vibrant colours, traditional outfits, and shared stories made this event a truly special occasion.

Year 4 Blue Assembly – Leading with Values

The Year 4 Blue Assembly was an inspiring showcase of what it means to be outstanding for others. Through their performance, students beautifully demonstrated how the core values of courage, commitment, and compassion are lived out in our daily lives. Their message was a powerful reminder of the positive impact kindness and perseverance can have on the world around us.

 Upcoming Events:

  • Friday 28 March – Merici and Pallotti House Patron Day

  • Tuesday 1 April – CAPSS Cricket Carnival

We are grateful to our students, staff, and families for making this a fortnight to remember. Thank you for your ongoing support and encouragement—it is through our shared efforts that our school community continues to thrive.

Warm regards

Katya Anderson

Project Compassion 2025

This Lent, ̨UU is uniting to support Caritas Australia’s Project Compassion, standing in solidarity against poverty and injustice. As a faith community, we are called not only to recognise suffering but to take meaningful action—offering our support, prayers, and generosity to those in need.

2025 is a Jubilee Year, a time of renewal, restoration, and justice. Rooted in Scripture, the Jubilee reminds us to reflect on our blessings, restore balance, and extend compassion to those who are vulnerable. As a College, we are embracing this call by grounding our Lenten journey in the Catholic Social Teachings, which inspire us to uphold human dignity, care for creation, and walk in solidarity with those facing hardship.

Our Project Compassion journey began with Pancake Tuesday and Rice Bowl Day, laying a strong foundation for further opportunities to put our faith into action. We encourage all students and families to stay connected through the College calendar and social media for upcoming fundraising events and ways to engage with Project Compassion this Lent.

This year, an online sponsor is currently matching all Project Compassion donations up to $500, doubling the impact of our community’s generosity. Every contribution, no matter the size, helps transform lives.

To make a tax-deductible donation, please visit ̨UU’s fundraising portal

Thank you for your continued support in making a difference this Lent.

Best regards,

Damian Ramos

Deputy of Catholic Identity and Mission

The National Assessment Program in Literacy and Numeracy will take place in Weeks 6 and 7 this term. Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will be assessed in the areas of Writing, Reading, Conventions of Language and Numeracy.

Teachers will have dedicated time before the commencement of NAPLAN to guide students on how to navigate the screen while using the online assessment platform.

Students in Years 5, 7 and 9 are reminded to bring their fully charged devices and headphones on their scheduled NAPLAN days.

We aim to create a seamless assessment experience within a calm and well-structured environment, allowing it to feel like a natural part of the student’s day. Students are encouraged to approach their assessments with confidence and put forth their best effort.

Supporting your child through co-regulationAlexandra CarcioneMon, 10 Mar 2025 02:47:28 +0000/news-blog/co-regulation57f874e8440243944ef66aa7:57f8a565d482e9a19e4c2458:67ce50fc25f21a01dad41c70Supporting Your Child Through Co-Regulation: Insights from the Berry Street Education Model

As parents, we often wish our children could manage their emotions smoothly, make good choices under stress, and navigate life’s challenges with resilience. However, emotional regulation is not an innate skill—it is something children learn over time through experience, practice, and, most importantly, connection with trusted adults. This is where co-regulation plays a crucial role.

What is Co-Regulation?

Co-regulation is the process of helping a child manage their emotions through warm, responsive interactions. It involves an adult providing guidance, support, and modeling of self-regulation strategies so that, over time, the child can internalize these skills and apply them independently. Co-regulation is particularly essential during moments of distress when a child’s nervous system is dysregulated and they need external support to regain balance.

The Link Between Co-Regulation and the Berry Street Education Model

The Berry Street Education Model (BSEM) is a trauma-informed approach that emphasizes the importance of building strong, supportive relationships to help children develop resilience and self-regulation. One of its key pillars, Body, highlights the significance of co-regulation in stabilizing a child’s physiological and emotional state before they can engage in learning and personal growth.

Through BSEM, educators and caregivers are encouraged to be calm, predictable, and attuned to a child’s needs. This approach aligns with co-regulation by recognizing that children, particularly those who have experienced trauma or adversity, require safe and stable relationships to help them develop emotional regulation skills.

How Parents Can Practice Co-Regulation at Home

While co-regulation happens naturally in parenting, being intentional about it can strengthen your child’s ability to manage emotions effectively. Here are some strategies based on the Berry Street Education Model:

1. Stay Calm and Regulated Yourself

Children absorb the emotional energy of those around them. If a child is overwhelmed, they need an adult who remains calm. This doesn’t mean suppressing your emotions, but rather modeling healthy self-regulation strategies such as deep breathing, grounding techniques, or taking a moment to pause before reacting.

2. Use Predictable Routines

Predictability provides a sense of safety, which is particularly important for children who struggle with regulation. Consistent routines for mornings, mealtimes, and bedtime create stability and reduce emotional outbursts triggered by uncertainty.

3. Validate and Acknowledge Emotions

Instead of dismissing or minimizing big emotions, acknowledge your child’s feelings with statements like, “I can see that you’re really frustrated right now.” This helps them feel heard and understood, making it easier for them to regulate.

4. Engage in Regulating Activities Together

Physical activities such as rhythmic movement (rocking, bouncing, or walking), deep breathing exercises, or sensory play (such as playdough or water play) can help children calm their nervous system. The Berry Street Model emphasizes body-based strategies as a foundation for self-regulation.

5. Coach, Don’t Control

Rather than telling a child how they “should” feel or react, guide them through their emotions. Offer choices, such as, “Would you like to take a deep breath with me, or would you like to squeeze this stress ball?” This fosters a sense of autonomy while still providing needed support.

6. Repair After Emotional Moments

If a conflict or emotional outburst occurs, take time to reconnect. A simple conversation like, “That was really hard for both of us. Let’s talk about what we can do differently next time,” helps reinforce emotional learning and strengthens your relationship.

The Long-Term Impact of Co-Regulation

By practicing co-regulation consistently, children develop the ability to self-soothe, manage stress, and build emotional resilience. This skill set is essential not just for childhood, but for lifelong wellbeing. The Berry Street Education Model reminds us that relationships are the foundation of learning and growth. As parents, our ability to co-regulate with our children is one of the most powerful tools we have to support their development.

By showing up with patience, empathy, and stability, we teach our children not just how to regulate their emotions, but also that they are not alone in their struggles. This creates a foundation of trust and connection that allows them to thrive in all aspects of life.
